How do I know how long a chain needs to be on a mountain bike?

I've brokent a chain on a new used bike. It apears to be way to short, and to have been broken b4. When I put a new chain on how do I know how long, and how can I be sure this one is to short

Place the chain on the smallest chainring (in front) and the smallest cog (in the rear).
Lace it through the derailleurs as normal with the ends of the chain at the bottom (between the rear derailleur and the chainring).
Pull the chain just enough to have the derailleur pulleys place the slightest amount of tension on the chain. If it is necessary to remove links to achieve this, then do so.

The key is to have a VERY small amount of tension on the chain (caused by the rear derailleur) when the chain is on the smalles chainring and cog. It shouldn't hang loose, and it shouldn't be too tight. Source(s): 26 years in the industry
^Good Answer. Also make sure to change to both big rings to make sure it fits. You should not pedal under load when in this combination, but it would suck to accidentally switch to it and get stuck.
