Mountain Bike Gears Acting Weird?

I have a Specialized Hardrock sport disc 24 speed, i have had it for about a month, i havent done much heavy riding. but today when i was riding i have the gears at the most tension they get, and i stood up and pedaled and the crank slipped, by slipped i mean that it slammed down really fast, it didnt sound good. i rode for a bit after that and everything seamed to work fine, actually, the ride was much smoother. but what im asking is, should i take it in, or will it be fine?

Try not to shift gears under heavy down stroke pedaling like standing directly on them. You need to select gears under less stress to your drive-train. Also try shifting one gear at a time, not multiple gears at once. Unless your bike's gear system is totally dialed in do only one gear at a time. If your bike can go though all of the gears one at a time smoothly without clicking and chattering the bike should be fine. Get it tuned up if it does.
Hope this helps,good luck!
I think the best course of action would be to review your gear changing technique. Take it easy.
Take the bike back to your local bike shop. Typically new bikes need an adjustment after 30-40 riding days as the cables stretch and adjustments need to be made to keep the brakes and deraileur working properly. When your in there tell them what happened and ask them to take a look at the bike.
Take it to the shop where you got it and have them adjust the gears for you. It's normal for the cables to stretch a little, which will throw off your shifting. It's an easy fix if you understand how derailleurs work, but if not you will only make it worse.

The other hint is to NOT SHIFT UNDER POWER! A bicycle drivetrain needs to spin to change gears, but hammering down on the pedals will lead to a broken chain (and your nuts hitting the top tube HARD). If you must shift, back off on your pedaling pressure for a couple turns while the gears do what they're designed to.
Its still under warranty any "reputable" shop will have at least one free servicing make sure they go over the whole bike specifically the wheels they will be due for retentioning by now failure to do so early will result in early failure of the wheels ...when you get the bike new like everything else on it the spokes stretch and seat themselves this (retentioning) is a critical thing on new bikes that i always tell my customers to do (after one week!) ...did your bike shop?
