Mountain bike help!!!!!! (gears)? |
Hi I wonder if you can help me; i have a nearly new Scott Voltage, and on the crank i put it into the highest gear (3), and then change down to second, and when i try to change to 1, i get a horrible crunching sound and it refuses to change down, the only way i can change down to 1, is to go to the highest (3) then quickly change down both gears. After a while this gets really annoying as i like to use my gears. I hope you can help me Regards Kris On the crunching problem, it sounds like your front derailleur is too tight (the smallest chainring is the initial setting and going from it to larger is tightening the cable). If you have a barrel adjuster by your shifter, screw it inwards toward the shifter. A really good site for derailleur adjustment is: http://sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustm... On your first question, it sounds like your front derailleur is too high or too low, but there are several possibilities.. read on... Shift onto the 2nd chainring, then get off the bike. Move the shifter carefully until the outside edge of the derailleur is over the largest chainring. Pedal backwards until you find the closest distance between chainring and derailleur cage. This distance should be no more than 5/32" (5mm) and no less than 1/32" (1mm). Then, looking at the top of the derailleur, make sure the cage is in line with the chainring. Note that the INSIDE of the cage is not necessarily in line. If this needs to be adjusted, shift the front derailleur so that the cable is in full slack position. Loosen the derailleur fixing bolt (and cable if necessary) and move the derailleur into position. Tighten it up, reattach the cable, adjust as necessary, and you are done. One of the other things that might be causing it is having the rear in one of the 3 largest cogs while trying to downshift. If the chain length is a little off it will cause too much tension and stop the chain from moving correctly. The last possibility (which should actually be checked first) is that there is either too much tension on the cable or that the "L" limit screw needs to be backed off 1/4 turn or so. Regarding discs, you should take it to a shop for diagnosing, then ask them to let you watch. It could be a bunch of things causing the issue you have, and the remedy shuld be administered by a professional. 27 years in the industry |
