Mountain bike disc brake cleaning? |
What's the best way to clean rotors for disc brakes? I've lost some braking power in my brakes and want to clean it off. But I'm not sure what solutions to try. What have you tried before? Thanks -To clean my dirty disk brakes, I use non-chlorinated automotive disk brake cleaner. It works great for me and I have had no problems with the cleaners I have used. I just spray it on and let it dry. If you are losing power you might want to check your brake pads for wear and change the pads if they are low. Also try sanding your disk rotor to remove any glazing. I use a really fine grit sandpaper like 800 grit to just roughen up the disk braking surface and remove the glaze from the disks. -If you have some light brake dust or dirt on the calipers and rotors, I use plain water mixed with some dishwashing detergent to remove the dirt and dust. Remember not to touch the clean disk braking surface. The natural oils from your finger tips or oil from the bag of chips you just ate on your fingers tips can actually have a negative affect on the braking performance if it gets transfered to your brake pads. Hope this helps. I also use automotive disk brake cleaner. It works good for really dirty brakes. Rubbing alcohol...works great and it's cheap. Use rubbing alcohol, its the best. Also, you may want to check your brake pads. And brake fluid level. The calipers might need to be bled. |
