Mountain bike rear suspension spring seems to be creaking, how can I stop it?

The suspension works fine, it just makes a creaking noise when in use.

You need to isolate the source first. Is it the spring, the shock piston, the shock mounts, or the linkage?

Any lube - even wd-40 - will help you find the problem.

Squirt a tiny amount on the piston. If the noise stops, you probably need to rebuild the shock. If the noise didn't stop.....

Squirt a little on the contact points where the spring contacts the stops, first the bottom, then the top. If it stops, loosen the stop as much as you can, clean it really well with degreaser, then use a thicker lube like bearing grease on the contact points. You don't need much, just a light coating. If the noise _still_ didn't stop after squriting the spring........

Squirt a little into the bushings where the shock mounts to the frame. If it stops, remove the shock, clean and relube the mounts, then re-attach the shock. If it _STILL_ didn't stop.......

Squirt the linkage. If that worked, you'll need to completely break down and rebuild the rear triangle.

Otherwise, look into the seat, seatpost, bottom bracket, and rear wheel. Some noises sound like they're coming from one place, when they're really completely unrelated to where you thought they came from.
The squeak is either coming from the shock itself of the pivot points on the frame. Check out the manual for the shock. Most companies will have maintenance information on their websites. If this doesn't take care of it, try checking the bearing on the frame pivots.

I just wanted to add to not use WD40. It may make the noise go away, but it won't add any long term protection and will just mask the fact that you have bearings and bushings that may need cleaning and/ or greasing.
Take it apart, clean it, lubricate it, and try it again.
You can always buy new ones too.
wd 40
You got some good answers here and I want to add that you should also check your spokes and tighten any loose ones in addition to the other answers, especially Jay's answer.
Fellow Biker
Spray a litle WD-40 on there. That should clear it up!
