My mountain bike really hurts my butt while riding...I'm somewhat overweight, but not bad! I got a gell cover |
but it doesn't really work....what's the problem and what should I do? If it feels like the gel cover (which you shouldn't really need at all) isn't helping, it could be that your seat is up too high. This could cause your hips to rock side to side when you pedal, which results in high pressure points. With the seat down just low enough for your hips to stay level when you pedal, your weight stays evenly distributed. It also helps to stand up for a bit now and then while you're riding. You can buy a wider seat. And they make some that are really comfortable. Always wear bike pants, they might look a bit silly, but it really helps (that's why professionals use them). And the pain usually gets better after you've been riding for a longer time (the first few days are always the most painfull). If you go to a biking store they can find you a seat that works for you. Sometimes the gel ones don't work all that well. Does your bottom feel numb after you ride? If so, the culprit is most likely the gel seat. Gel seats feel good at first, but it puts pressure on places that aren't supposed to have pressure. When you sit down on a nice bike seat, you feel pressure on two spots of your bottom. This keeps the pressure off of the nerves in between your legs. With a gel seat, you sink down in it and then you have pressure on the nerves in between your legs, causing much discomfort. It is also a good idea to get a women's specific seat because men and women are shaped differently. I suggest that you go to a bike shop. They should let you test out some saddles there. Ask them for suggestions on how to choose the right saddle. lots of time researching about bikes Those gell covers are not always the best thing. First it depends on how long you are riding. Not how far...how many minutes your butt is on the seat. If you do not have cycling shorts with padding get a pair...don't skimp on price, you generally get what you pay for, as far as butt comfort goes get a good pair. also try different seat types, go to a bike shop and get some input from a woman not a man , I wouldn't expect a woman to recommend a seat for me, know what I mean Vern? The more you ride the longer you will be able to ride in comfort. I ride for about 4 hours twice a week and two hours 3 times a week, If I do a longer ride my butt starts feeling it at about 5 hours...6 hours...dang. It's all what it gets used to. Also I would have the bike shop check your seat height, that could influence butt comfort, and is a good thing to have correct to keep from having problems with knees and hips. |
