What type of riding are you going to be doing? When I was looking for a bike I also asked on the bicycling.com forum. A lot of people on that site have great advice.
Save your money, there are no good new mtn bikes in the price range you are looking. The first price bracket for any thing fairly good is $500~700. Below that you will be regretting your choice in a short time and will probably give up riding. Now that is not to say you can't find a second hand bike in that range. Go to your local bike shop and check the boards, sometimes you can find super deals from riders who have to have the latest model and will sell their old bike at a bargain price.
