Difference between road biking with a road bike and mountain bike.? Both will get you there, but a road bike will be significantly faster than a mountain bike. The road bike is more comfortable partly because the drop down handlebars give you at least 3 different positions to choose from. With the straight bars on a mountain bike, you only have one position that you are stuck in for the duration. The extra weight doesn't seem like a big deal for short trips, but ride for 20 or more miles and it begins to wear you down. The extra rolling resistance of the wide low pressure tires also works against you. Road bikes have narrow tires that run 70-100+ lbs of pressure. Mountain bikes have some advantages on steep climbs, but road bikes are increasingly available with triple chainrings and granny gears. Even on my very high-geared 12 speed, I can still climb most hills faster than on my mountain bike. A compact crankset could be even better. Source(s): experience Road bikes are lighter, and since the tires are thinner, offer less rolling resistance. The geometry is different, therefore putting you in a more aerodynamic position. The gearing is such that it will allow you to pedal more efficiently over longer distances. Not all the reasons, but will give you a good idea. I'd like to add to that last answer that a road bike will take less effort to travel because of those factors. Also, a road bike will be more comfortable on a trip, hence the name road bike. If you haven't noticed, the mountain bike rides smoother but becomes tiring after a pretty short distance in comparison. Most mountain bike racers cross train on road bikes to improve their stamina. On a long ride, about 3 hours per day. Road bikes are so much faster and more efficient than a mountain bike, even one with slick tires on it. The weight, aerodynamics, handling, rolling resistance and gearing of a road bike are all far superior on the street. |
