Question about mountain bike handlebars? |
I notice that most MTB racers do not use bar ends. This means their handlebars have only one hand position. Doesn't it get uncomfortable not being able to switch positions? Actually, many cross country MTBers do use bar ends. They facilitate climbing for many... It does get uncomfortable, but most cyclists get used to the sensation and the race should be over before the rider experiences any pain. Bar ends are usually only found on bikes that will be ridden for over 4-5 hours. If you don't have the bars at the right position, your hands will hurt. Besides, for racers, they need to have their hands near the gear shifters. If they have to remove their hands from bar-ends to change gears, they could lose control of the bike. I would think they'd get caught on trees, bushes, etc. if someone is doing serious biking, or maybe even make falls more dangerous. If you are riding at a anything more than a casual pace, your hands are in constant motion. For a recreational rider they might feel a little discomfort (but they won't get off the seat and attack a hill). However for most XC and fast riders bar ends are just extra weight (I know racers that changed all the bolts to titanium to save less than 100 grams). Most XC racers will probably have a set in their tool box for races that involve long climbs and if they think they it could save a few seconds on the climb. |
