Rim problems on mountain bike?

I have a Trek 4300 and while I鈥檓 riding the rim moves back and forth and hit鈥檚 the brakes I know the rim is not loose. Does this mean the rim is bent if so what do I do to fix it?

Sounds to me like your rim is bent. Take your bike to a local bike shop and have them true the rim. The truing should last while, and if the wheel was built and tensioned properly, it should work. Other things to consider however are, your weight, are you too big for the rim/wheel you are riding? Your riding style, Do you bomb over curbs/logs/bumps/rocks/pothole... Do you drag your real wheel over obstacles? If so you may want to modify your riding style and or search for a beefier rim/wheel such as a Bontrager clydesdale or the like. If you are the right weight for the bike/wheel, and have a reserved riding style, and the wheel has been properly built an tensioned, then the wheel can remain true for quite some time. If the "wobble" is 1-2 mm it can be fixed, if it is 5 mm or more, you might have to end up getting a new wheel/rim. Source(s): http://www.blackbarbicycles.com...
Sorry, but your rim is bent. Your local bike shop might be able to straighten it to an extent, but it will never be perfectly straight again.
It depends on how much it moves. While it might be bent, it might just be untrue and need trueing. Why don't you go to a bike shop?

If the rim is bent, probably there's not much you can do but change it. I can be wrong on this, but I would swap it.
