Are there any mountain bike events going on in the next few months that I could take part in?

If you're into downhill, there is a downtown street race in bridgenorth (i think) in Shropshire. There are also regular DH races at Penshurst in Kent if you're down south. Have a look on www.southerndownhill.com.

Don't think there are any MTB events however why not give Cyclo cross races a go. For most local races MTB's are permited . See the British Cycling website for details.
