Whats the best mountain bike pedals? hard-core guys who pay for their own stuff usually ride Crank bro's. Me, I'm not so hard-core, not really into technical stuff or big drops - just riding the local trails, so just about any SPD-type will do. Make sure you buy your shoes and pedals at the same time so you can make sure they're compatible and can return if they aren't. I made that mistake and had to perform surgery on the tread of my shoes before they'd work w/ my pedals. You can click out fairly easily once they are setup correctly. This let's you use both sides of your muscle groups while pedalling. I like my Time ATAC XS Carbon titanium pedals. In muddy conditions, they seem to work a tad better than my Speedplay Frogs which in turn I prefer over the previous Shimano SPDs I had. It's personal preference that comes to play here as they are all very good. Crank Bros. Mallets i have the Crank Brothers Eggbeater SL clipless pedals. they are wicked! they dont pick up any mud and the four sided entry is so easy to clip into. another plus is the low spring tension. its easy to clip in and takes almost no effort to unclip, but it stays in firm when you want to put a lot of torque into it. i bought mine new on ebay for $70. the next step up is the 2Ti which is over $200. not worth it for me. they are also SPD style so they are compatible with a wide range of shoes. i use 661 Experts. $50, comfortable, and looks nice.
