Looking for good mountain bike, i like trek's 3900, any other suggests?

I've had a Trek 4900 now for 4 years, used it about 3000 miles, 90% offroad. The only thing that has broken is the seat which would be covered under the 5 year warranty. I ride the bike hard, but not off drops or jumps.

If the 3900 is at the upper end of your price range then go for it; especially if you're not 100% sure that you're going to turn mtn biking into an obsession. You'll get a solid performer.

If you already know you enjoy going offroad then you might consider saving a little more money and going with a Trek 6000. The money will buy you a 9 speed cassette in the rear, which is incredibly helpful on steep uphills. The front suspension will be a little more cushioned. I wish I had purchased the 6000 instead of the 4900, but I also didn't know how interested I would be in the sport.

If you are going to do the majority of your riding offroad then you should strongly consider 2 improvements, not necessarily in this order:

1) Knobby tires. The ones that come with the bike are more hybrid that are good on & off road. They don't grip at all when ascending. I'm partial to the Panaracer Smoke (rear) and Panaracer Dart (front) which can be purchased at performance bike shop for $18 on sale.

2) Clipless Pedals ($60) & shoes($90). These attach your shoes directly to the pedal so you can pedal in complete circles, but are still easy to get out of. It makes your pedaling more efficient.
Trek schmeck...blah
Trek kicks as*. I broke my mongoose with ease but im still tryin to do something so extereme that it breaks my trek. best bike ive ever had
A Trek 3900 is pretty much condisered an entry-level MTB. As long as you aren't buying your bike from Wal-Mart, Target, or some other "big box" type store, you will be getting a decent bike. A small sampling of good manufacturers of entry level bikes is Cannondale, Specialized, Gary Fisher, Giant, and Kona. These companies all make durable bikes that should last you a while. If you step up into the mid to high-level bikes, there are even more bikes to choose from.

The most important thing to look at in a bike is how it fits you. If the bike does not fit you well, you won't have as much fun riding it.
depending on your budget, you may try looking at Specialized lines... Hard Rock, Rock Hopper, Stumpjumper, etc. They are all built really well and have a wide range of prices.
