The rear of the frame and the front fork has to have the disk brake attachment tabs otherwise you are out of luck.
You first have to make sure that the frame, fork and wheels can take disc brakes.

The fork should have some adapters at the rear of the left lower, the frame should have some adapters at the top of the left seatstay (which is the tube that goes from the rear wheel to the seat tube).

The wheels must have six places to put the bolts at the left of each one.

Some mid level bikes that come with V-Brakes are disc-ready (meaning you should only buy the brakes), while low end probably won't have the wheels with disc hubs.

If your bike comes disc ready, you could look at paying somewhere around 70-80 bucks per disc plus instalation (probably the bike shop could install them for free if you buy it from them, but you'd have to check with them).

If your frame and fork support disc, but the hubs does not, expect paying like 100 bucks or more for that.
