Looking to spend 350-400 pounds on a mountain bike. One bike shop recommended ' Giant ' bikes...? |
but that for that price it's not worth having disc brakes or too much suspension. Good advice? Any other tips on good brands or suppliers would be appreciated. Giant is a good brand, so are Specialized, Trek, etc. About disk brakes and suspension. It depends what you are going to use it for. The simpler the bike, the less maintenance and repairs needed. For light country rides and urban riding no suspension is really needed, the same as the disk brake. A front suspension could be comfortable for harder or more demanding country trails or mountain bike trails riding. For that price you are not going to get the very best, but most likely, you will not needed to be. Many front suspensions now a days do a decent job for the money. Go to a reputable bike store and get advice from a knowledgeable mechanic. Let them know what you are go int to use it for, etc. etc. Giant is a great bike....you can find one to suit your needs...but it is more than you are willing to spend....mine was $1200 canadian I've got a Specialized Hardrock Sport with front suspension and disc brakes. Bought it within your price range. Great bike for waht I use it for which is towing my daughter on her tag along as well as some off roading on the South Downs. Giant are also good. Don't go to a chain store (eg Cycle King or Halfords). Their staff know next to nothing. Go to a local independent cycle specialist. They will advise you better. Or, look in the back of the cycling mags and also at their reviews. We bought a Giant bike for our son last birthday. It got stolen from outside the house (it had three heavy duty locks on it) within two weeks ... Claud butler cape wrath disc, Slightly more expensive but has quality disc brakes and suspension as well as having gained 10/10 in several different magazine/product reviews. If you can't budge on the price maybe consider a standard cape wrath still decent suspension but within your budget due to the lack of disc brakes, but also you need to go by your style of riding and size/weight etc as a bike that is good for someone may not be for someone else.
