I have a 2nd hand mountain bike with Shimano 18 speed gears. How do I use/change gears.? It depends on the gear change setup. Lever - move the lever to the desired gear. (your bike's ooold if it has these!!) Gripshift - on the handlebars, you just twist them to change gears. Quickfire - press the up or down buttons to change gear. I also seem to remember having a bike with another form of quickfire gear control - it only had one lever, which changed gear up or down depending on whether you flicked it forward or back. Whichever of the above types you have, keep pedalling (albeit not flat out) to allow the derailleur to move the chain across. mine has shimano gears, they are twisty ones on the handles, but you get different types If it's like mine it will have two handlebar twists. One's for the gifferent gear ratios (you have 3 diffent sprockets if you look on the back tyre.) the other ones for the gears 1-6 in that ratio.Keep pedalling when you change otherwise the chain won't move over. You can also strain the cables if you change gear when you're not moving. Mine has 18 gears but round town I tend to use use the top 6 as I rarely cycle up big hills except when I actually use it on forest trails. Depends on the shifter type. Either twist the hand grip or push the trigger levers. P |
