What is the best hardtail mountain bike for under $1000? If you want the absolute best bang for the buck, buy a used bike. Try to buy locally to avoid being ripped off and to test ride the bike. Only buy if you know how to tune up a bike or is willing to take it into the shop to get tuned up. If you want the best bang for the buck for a new bike, buy online. I would recommend Ibex. They have a great reputation and have bikes for a lot cheaper than in stores. Only buy if you are willing to do some minor assembly. Make sure you choose the right frame size. If you want to buy in a local bike shop, there are a lot of bikes to choose from. There isn't a "best" bike. Because the companies are highly competitive, bikes in the same price range usually have comparable components. Avoid target, walmart, and sport authority bikes. Go to a real bike shop so they have a real bike mechanic. Specialized and Trek are good brands, but make sure you don't buy it because of the brand. It's no use if the bike doesn't fit your body, so make sure you test ride the bikes if you want to buy at your local bikes store or a used bike. By the way, what type of terrain to you ride on?
