Can anyone suggest a good mountain bike for 拢300-拢400. Also dont know what is a good make? any suggestions?

Firstly, what sort of mountain biking are you going to do? XC? Free ride? Down hill?

Lets assume XC. Are you going to just go out for a ride, do you need a race set up? How big are the hills that you plan on climbing.

Once you have decided what you want to do, you can look at frame and components. For 拢300 - 拢400 you are not going to get XT. Chances are you will have 21 speed Shimano pods. Do not do twist grip, or integrated gear/brakes. Too much to go wrong. However, there are bargains out there if you look for them:

Claude Butler - Cape Wrath. Very good Deore (27) spec bike, with Rockshock J2s. Although the 07 model is 拢450, you can get last years for 拢350 is. This has 6061 Ali frame and V brake.

Specialized do a reasonable model for about 拢350. RST forks (Downside) and 24 speed Acera gears. Good frame though.

Scott also have a bike in this range, but it is quite heavy. That said you can get an 06 Scale for about 拢450. Good race bike, but not ideal for general use (Deore).

Giant have bought out a reasonable bike for 拢425. This has an ali frame 6061 and hydrolic disks. The shocks are not great, but will do what you want. Also come with Deore.

However, you might also consider last years XTC. You can still pick these up for about 拢410. This has an excelent frame, hydraulic discs, 100mm shocks and Mazzoci forks.

People have mentioned Marin and you might also look at Cannondale. Both of these are about 拢800 over your budget, although you can pick up a Canondale frame and forks from e-bay very reasonably.

Although there are other manufacturers, they are not as good. Have a look at these sites:

You can also get the occasion bargain from:

Luck
My hubby has got a Marin,i'd never heard of it before but he swears by it.They are quite expensive but i'm sure you could look about for a good deal or a second hand one.
What do you want it for???
if its rough ground for downhill and extreme use...then i suggest a SARRACEN HAZZARD for your price range.

if you want a bike to ride around on flat roads or just to get to work then go and get yourself a second hand cheap one and save over 拢200 of your money.

Marin is top as suggested to you already.....you are right
i have one and is my prefferd bike for downhill as it takes anything i put it through but.....
your looking at over 拢900 brand new
take a look on ebay...but watch you dont get scammed lol
if people on ebay can sell something for 拢500 BNIB
they can buy it cheaper to make a profit...so why donr you????
but it cheaper that is?
Any known brand will be fine for a make but as for a particular bike reccommendation people will tell you what bsuits them and there riding style and not what suits you so you need to get out and try some bikes, i would recommend a claud butler cape wrath and if you could stretch your budget a little then i would reccommend the cape wrath disc as this is better although roughly a hundred pounds more
most manufacturers have different levels of bikes in most price ranges, so you will need to shop for exactly what you are looking for...

but for brand names I recommend KHS, Specialized, Giant, Marin, and Trek...
