I am looking to buy a mountain bike online. now its asking me for size of frame.? |
The choices are 17.5 inch, 19.5 inch and 21.5 inch. How do i determine what's right for me? bikesdirect.com has guidelines on the size. Sizing on mountain bikes is the lenght of the seat tube, the tube of metal the goes from under your seat to the bottom bracket (the tube junction where the pedal crank arms connect to the frame). The simplest way to estimate your mountain bike size is to measure your inseam (not on your pants, but the actual length of your leg. See sources for suggested techniques), subtract 3 inches (the recommended "standover," or the distance from the top tube to your crotch, on mountain bike is 3"), and then subtract 10", which is generally the distance from the bottom bracket to the ground on a mountain bike. The result of these caluclations probably be somewhere between those sizes. It's important to actually talk with the people you're buying it from. Bike sizes aren't necessarily uniform across different brands. A 19-inch in one may actually be the same as an 18-inch in another brand. It used to be that a Schwinn 19-inch was the same size as a Specialized 18-inch and a 17.5-inch in a Yeti. I realize that "buying online" may be your only option or seem more convenient, but your best bet is to go to a good bike shop and actually ride the bikes you're interested in after the staff has guided you in the right direction. It's a pain in the butt sending back a bike that doesn't fit right! |
