Does anyone know a really good mountain bike i can get for about $150? |
im conidering the mongoose xr 200 but its a little too expensive at $169.00 All the previous posters are right. However, I too had a tough time shelling out $500 or more on something I wasn't sure I was going to really get into. I spent $130 on a full suspension Mt. Bike from K-mart about 4 years ago. It didn't have any good components on it other than the Sram twist grip shifters, which still aren't that great. I have taken good care of this bike, cleaning it after most rides, cleaning the chain regularly and it hasn't let me down even once! Last year, I found I was riding on the road a lot more than off and started researching road bikes. As a father of 4 kids under the age of 13, I found it difficult to part with $700 or more on a new entry level ride. I happened to stumble across someone selling an older Trek 1200. They guy gave a really good deal on it and now I'm riding that about 95% of the time. I still have the cheap K-mart mt. bike and ride it when taking the kids out for a ride around the neighborhood. My recommendation is if you like the Mongoose, buy it, but don't mistake it for a serious mt. bike, you will be disappointed. Go ahead and take it off road if you want, but don't try any big jumps or drops. I would suggest not getting a full suspension one like I did. It's way too inefficient for light trail and road riding. Go for one with a front suspension, with a hardtail. You will have better efficiency when riding on the road and up hills. Have fun and be safe. $150 bucks won't get you a really good bike. It'll get you a piece of wal-mart junk. If you are serious about cycling, you need to spend maybe $400-$500 on a decent entry level bike that can be upgraded as needed. Considering that you can spend thousands on a good bike, five hundred bucks is cheap. A $169 mtn bike from wal-mart may have suspension, gears, etc., but it's absolute junk. The frame is junk, the wheels are junk, the bearings are junk. No kidding. A good bicycle is not a toy. It's a precision instrument, like a car or a motorcycle. My single speed Kona (read (1) gear) with no suspension fork was a grand. My bro's single speed was about 3 grand. I'm not bragging, I'm just trying to make you aware that you get what you pay for. Used bikes are also a good option. Check out craig's list, ebay, and mtbr.com. Bottom line: Wal-mart bikes suck. There are no two ways about it. Anyone who tells you otherwise is either lying or delusional. The Mongoose XR200 is NOT a mountain bike. It is a cheap thing made to look like a mountain bike, intended only for on the road and on gravel paths. On top of that it is horribly heavy and will tire you out very quickly. If a $19 difference is going to make you or break you then I am afraid it is time to look for a used bike or save up some more money. 27 years in the industry I'll send ya $19 for peat sakes... or you could mow my lawn for $20 and buy yourself a pop to cool you off with too! No, but you could buy a good helmet for that price, or maybe some cycling shoes and new pedals. Seriously, if you really want a mountain bike and not just something that has that look but is a POS, save your money, spend at least $500 and get something decent. One thing no one has mentioned on this forum is police auctions; bikes get stolen constantly and when recovered but not claimed, end up at auctions. You might be able to pick up a better quality bike in your budget, but be aware that it might need some work. Why you want risking life and have some adrenalin from it on junk like this I want to know . Visit Canadian Tire . Iam shure that you find better bike for little more money . |
