What is the average weight of a mountain bike these days?

I'm just beginning and don't want to spend much more than $500.

Apparently you're female, so i could generally assume you're shorter and thus will buy a smaller bike. With that said, the properly fitted bike will weigh about 25lbs or less, depending on the company. A lower end company that sells its product at walmart or department stores probably doesn't scrutinize weight during R&D, so you'd really have to go to a reputible company to get a well designed, weight-conscience bike.
an aluminium bike with weigh about 23 pounds, anything lighter wont hold up and anything heavier will wear you out
For that price range you should expect a front suspension bike to weigh around 24-25lbs. There are a few entry level full suspension bikes at that price point and those will be around 30-35lbs depending on the bike.

The lighter weight materials Titanium and Carbon Fiber raise the price of the bike considerably getting you into around $2000 or more for most of these bikes.
For 500 clams all in, a new stock MTB can weigh anywhere from 25 to 30 lbs maybe more. If you are concerned about weight buy a used MTB. The 500 bucks will go allot farther than retail, and you will probably get a better bike that doesn't weigh too much. Make sure it鈥檚 not worn out. Have a knowledgeable friend have a look at it too. Kind of like buying a car. You can find Buy/Sell bike forums on the net. You may even get lucky and find one on eBay with local pick up.
Well, it depends. For a hardtail (a bike with only a front suspension), for about that price, it could be somewhere around 28-30 lbs. For full suspension bikes, probably 32-35 lbs, or maybe a little bit more.

It's because at that price range, probably the fork will use coil springs rather than an air fork, also heavier components. This is pretty nice weight.

If you'd had more money, probably a full suspension bike around 2K would be somewhere around 28-30 lbs, and a ht below 25.

And, you don't have to spend much more than 500. Buy a HT, because you will find it with better components, will be lighter, and it will help improve your skills.
Somewhere between 27-30 lbs. Anything around the 25 lbs mark would be considered very light.
