Which is the fastest speed possible with a mountain bike? |
Assuming a 3x5 gear combo With knobby tires on flat ground, probably 18 - 20 mph. With slicks, 20 - 22 mph. Off-road down hill on a straight - maybe 30 mph. down hill on a road with knobbys - 25 - 30 mph down hill on a road with slicks - 31 - 33 mph. Fitness level and strength of rider will also affect the outcome. I believe terminal velocity is about 120 mph. This could be achieved driving of a tall cliff! As fast as you can pedal it. by 3x5 im assuming you mean 15 speed at which point i would suggest a quick refresher on mechanical physics. your top speed would depend on gear ratio (not number of gears but number of teeth per gear) and input speed (legs, turning cranks), crank arm length, and tire size. thats just the mechanics and doesnt acount for frictional coefficient, wind resistance or other environmental variables. your question is like asking how fast can a pick up truck go? not enough info. Nah. Bikes commonly go as much as 550 miles an hour (when they are in an airplane). The fastest speed ever achieved on ANY bike was about 137mph... it was a SINGLE SPEED. Number of gears doesn't matter... the motor does, and the gear ratio does. 27 years in the industry |
