What is a good all around first timer mountain bike? |
What is a good all around first timer mountain bike? This all really depends on where you will be riding and what type of riding you may want to get into, single-track, downhill, freeride, dirt-jump? My suggestion would be to buy an ok first bike, something with good components. You may eventually buy a much better bike if you really like it and you will than be spending something like $2,000 to $7,000. A hardtail bike (a mountain bike with only suspension in the front) is a good place to start. These bikes generally costs less and are great beginner bikes. As there are many mountain bike manufacturers out there that range in price what you want to look for are good components. By this I mean Shimano LX or better derailleur, cassette, crank, etc. Shimano makes various components and generally anything LX or better (by better I mean XT or SRAM) is what you want. Most bikes come standard with at least mechanical disc brakes, you can get the old mechanical pads as well, these will do. The good bike companies are Kona, Intense, Specialized, Foes, Ellsworth, Banshee, Santa Cruz, Turner. But there are many others that people swear bye. Check out this web page which has great reviews for bikes and components. www.mtbr.com There are so many makes of mountain bikes. I would not spend a lot if it's not something you think you'll do a lot. You might want to consider a hybrid if you're going to do easier stuff, or borrow a friends bike for a few rides. I'd go with an Ibex bike, they are cheap and pretty reliable, but if you don't feel comftorable ordering online, I'd go with a Trek/Fisher. Like a Trek 6000. It's a good hardtail beginner bike that goes for about 700 bucks. I'd check out the Trek Hardtail Aluminum series. www.trekbikes.com Take a look and see what you find. Also, I could recomend a Fisher Wahoo. Another complete beginner entry level bike for about 100 dollars cheaper. Just remember, as a beginner, you won't really notice much difference between a 2,000 dollar bike and a 800 dollar bike, because you don't know what you're looking for. So even though the 2,000 dollar one may seem better because of the price, you might think that the 800 one is more comforatable to ride. So go to your local bike shop and ask to ride a bike at a local trail for a day, and try out all types. Try to notice small things, like riding position, grip of tires, ease of gear change, sturdiness, etc. So good luck and have fun on the trails, I love to see beginners join this sport!!! not one but 2 bikes! buy a cheap $100 bike... upgrade if u can ride for 30mins and ride it regularly upgrade to 200-300 you'll see the difference!!! Lastly if u have more money then use it to get a better bike!!! You really didn't specify a price range. The Marin bikes make super good MTN bikes. http://www.marinbikes.com/bicycles_2007/... |
