Going to Hawaii soon. Is it worth taking my mountain bike or should I just rent? rent, unless you have the box. its a trade off- if you have the box and don't mind spending the time putting the bike together, breaking it down vs. playing on the beach, then bring it. I personally would rather rent, they have decent rentals. I think that bikes are still cheap on hawaiian airlines. check into it on their website, as it varies by airline as far as the fee goes. It would probably cost less if you rented one there, cuz if you take yours you will have to pay for shipping. if your unsure just call up the airlines and ask them, they would know for sure. Just rent. They have a ton of options over there. Make sure you give surfing a shot too when you are there. Its a blast. If you decide to ship, have it packed by a bike shop and shipped to a bike shop over there. If you try to fly it over on a commercial airline the box WILL BE OPENED AND RIFLED THROUGH and not packed back up together correctly, if you lock it they will cut the lock or break it open. Just rent, not worth the trouble. Well lets start out by asking a couple of questions, are you comfortable with your bike? Will your bike be able to handle the trails you will be riding there? If so, I say take your bike you'll be less likely to fall, since your more comfortable with your own bike. But if your bike can't handle the stuff you'll be riding in Hawaii, go rent a bike that specializes in the trails you will be hitting. I had to fly with my bike and it was a real hassle, particularly since I'm not good with making adjustments on it (it took a long time to feel right again). Depending on how good you are at maintenance, you could lose a lot of time. My bike came through OK, but it gave me a lot of stress. If you don't have a case, you could get a box from a bike shop (get their advice on how to arrange the parts inside the box), and just wrap everything that might rub, tape everything down in the box so nothing bangs, separate the forks with a piece of wood or plastic, and use styrofoam blocks inside as support for the sides of the box. It can be done, but if I would consider renting if I were you. |
