I am looking for the best value on studded mountain bike tires for ice travel. Any suggestions? Thanks!?
There are a number of companies making studded snow/ice tires. The good ones use Aluminum or alloy studs to save weight. I have done the "mind numbing" method described before and find my time, efforts and outcome are more valuable than any small savings that gets. The first link below has a few tires shown with very reasonable prices. i use a pair of Schwalbe (Snow Studs 2nd link) studded tires. They are a bit pricier, but I ride all winter long and find their durability to be top notch. You will also find them in the seasonal areas of http://www.performancebike.com and http://www.nashbar.com by summer's end at reasonable rates as well. I paid 60$ for the pair of Schwalbes thru the shop I ride for ... Good Luck and enjoy the icy riding! :-)

Your best value is to make them yourself: get a box of sheet metal screws and screw them through the lugs on an old tire, then cover the inside of the tire with duct tape (to protect the tube from the screw heads). It's a mind-numbingly boring task even with an electric screwdriver, and the results are not light, but they'll work.
