How do you put on a chain for a mountain bike? |
For a Specialized Rockhopper if it makes a difference... There are two chain types: 1. Master link - this chain has a link you can connect by hand. The new chain will have the simple instructions with it. 2. Pin connection - this type requires you to use a chain breaker tool. It will push the fixed pin in to connect the chain. This is not rocket science but you will need strong hands and a little mechanical know how. You must also make sure the chain is not kinked or stuck after doing this. In either case you must insure your new chain is the correct length. If you have your old one cut it to that length with the chain breaker. Best yet have someone that knows how to do this like a biker friend or a bike shop. Doing it wrong can cause chain skip, slap, problems shifting etc. You have to find the master link and then thread it through. U have to take off the tire, put the chain around the spokes, then put the tire back on.... i took my bikes apart a lot when i was younger |
