How do i fix the sprocket on a GT Ironhorse Maverick sport '05 mountain bike? |
I can't seem to get the sprocket to come apart. My pedals are unalligned.I would like to check the ballbearings or tighten the sprocket.Whichever is necessary. I to a local bike shop!!!!!!!!!! Source(s): http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bicyclingh... If your pedals are "unaligned" such as the crankarms not 180 degrees from each other, then you're going to need a crankset and bottom bracket replacement. Yet, given that the comfort technology is nearly identical to mountain bike technology (which that GT never had anyway), replacements need not be expensive. Tightening the sprocket? Ball bearings? Possibly the bottom bracket has come loose. Likely this is in the Tourney/Acera/Altus linup and using a bottom bracket similar to Shimano UN25. Probably, it is lesser than the UN25, but there's no need to save the $1.50 when UN25 is so much better. That is a sealed bottom bracket. Replacement is inexpensive ($10 to $13). Perhaps it needs to be installed using medium strength (removable) automotive thread locker to prevent this from happening in the future. Mention that at the bike shop. With tools, such as a Park CP2 crank puller and a bottom bracket tool, you can do this job yourself. Do you have your bike specs? Do they list what size is the current bottom bracket? If so, you can order those two tools, a bottom bracket and a crankset. However, if your crankset doesn't come off when you remove the bolts, chances are that it is survived its misadventure and does not need replacment. However, IF a crank puller, such as Park CP2 or other, is NOT required to release the crank from the bottom bracket, then you will need to purchase a new crankset. Running loose (connection between crank and bottom bracket) wallows out the interface (hurts the crankarm) and would cause the crankarms to suddenly fall off (in bits) at a later and unexpected moment. Chances are that if you took it to the bike shop that you could break-even on price. However, the price to fix it yourself is not much different and it could be entertaining. If your mountain bike sees water or extreme dust, push automotive grease into any exposed seams in the bottom bracket, after install. This will help to keep water out. Now, remove grease that you accidentally put onto the square taper interface, before installing the crankset. This is also very helpful to hubs and headsets. See harriscyclery.com for lots of fascinating reading on bike repair. Also, see the website of Park Tools. Oops!!! Forgot to mention. You know how attempting to tighten the left pedal actually loosens it? Well, the bottom bracket is backwards from pedals. Attempting to tighten the drive side of the bottom bracket actually loosens it. |
