How do i tell which rotor size to buy for disk brakes on a mountain bike? |
I am shopping around for disk brakes and have found that rotors come in a variety of sizes. now common sense tells me if the caliper is too close to my hub the disk will bottom out. is there a standard or will the calipers that i buy with the rotors automatically be spaced ? or do i need to measure the mounts on my front/rear forks Rotor size has nothing to do with price level. It's the brake you need - 6" or 140~165mm for Cross Country/Trail... 7" or 180~185 Front for "all moutain" riding 8" or 200~205 for Heavy Downhill on a 35lb plus downhill bike. If you are looking to replace a Bent/Warped rotor, the size of the prescribed rotor will be stamped. ALSO, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - It's a good idea to NOT MIX different brands of rotors - THey are ALL a little bit different in size and require the Adapter for the brand of rotor to match. For example - You can't run a Hayes 7" rotor with an Avid 7" Adapter, it's about 1/4 inch off. There is international standard and Post type(mostly on the fork) and then a RockShox Boxxer has it's own mount. 51mm or 74mm will be the call, and if you have a newer RockShox or Manitou it will be post type mount.
