What are a few good tips for maintaining the brand new quality of my expensive mountain bike??? |
Thank so much for your detailed answer... proper maintenance use quality lubricants maintain tire pressure replace wore or broken parts immediately never ride it unless it is in top condition do not try to use it beyond its design capabilities keep all cables adjusted at all times keep spokes tightened correctly keep it clean wash it after riding and store it in a dry place check all parts for wear before riding it check all adjustment before riding it make sure you keep the pedal that is toward the inside up when turning get a cheap one and ride it if you want your bike to be kept up like a girl car. The resale value of a MTB will be higher if you keep your frame looking good. Worn out components can be replaced when its time to sell. Here are a few suggestions. Put pieces of fame skin on places where cable rub will be a problem. This is just small pieces of clear hard tape you can get it at car detailing shops, 3M makes it. The nylon cable on brake and shift housings do a nasty job if left unchecked. Place some inner-tube or a product called lizzardskin on your chain stay. This is so chain slap wont chip your paint and gouge your frame. After you wash your bike, wax the frame using quality car wax. This accomplishes two things 1. keeps the paint looking good and 2. you get a closer look at the frame. You will notice small nicks and scratches. Go to your local hardware store and pick up a small tube of paint that matches the colour of your frame. This is paint for cars to cover up small scratches. Apply the paint to the areas that need attention. Once a year take your bike in to get a good professional tune up. I wont go into what they should do, but any existing and potential problems with your frame or components will be identified. Do this until you learn how to look after maintenance yourself. There is nothing wrong with looking after your bike. Some people will scoff. It just shows you appreciate your stuff and you value an earned dollar. Find a good bike mechanic. And stick with 'em. If something breaks don't say I was just riding along and _____ broke. Give them specifics and it will be easier to keep the bike dialed in to your specs. Also a dozen donuts if dropping your ride off in the morning keeps the gang happy. And if dropped off at closing time... well then a dozen cold ones are even better. Somethings I do at my bike shop. |
