Can you recommend an adult bike- mountain/ road, recreational only, 18 speeds, not too expensive...? 18 speeds are out-dated. Even your junk bikes from Walmart are now at least 21 speed. You did'nt say what your "expensive" is. Figure on spending at least $250 on a new entry level bike. You can try craigslist and/ or ebay for used bikes. But know what you're buying. Make sure it's a name brand like Trek or GT. Your department store bikes are all junk as far as quality goes. Unless you're 8 years old and will trash the bike in two months anyway. BTW, a good way to tell if the bike is half way decent is to see if it has quick release levers on BOTH front and rear wheels. Hi, Trek, Gt.......... I found my bike at a pawn shop. used, they wanted $200. for it but, I got it for $125. Shop around !! Good Luck, Eddie G.T do make halfway decent bikes for recreational use http://gtbicycles.com or the Haro V-Series mountain bikes arent bad check em out> http://harobikes.com/2006/atb/v1.php... I would say Trek too, some of their beginner bikes are really good values for the money. If you want to spend a little more and are petite, you can also get a WSD (Women's Specific Design) model. For the Trek's they are likely to cost in the $250-400 dollar range. That may seem like more than you want to spend, but truthfully, buying a crappy cheap bike from a mass retailer will make you less likely to ride in the future than a good bike from a bike shop. I have seen cheap bikes that wouldn't keep a true (straight) wheel for more than a couple miles, and otherwise stayed broken a lot. Also, some of the more expensive bikes you see at mass retailers are heavy, and unpleasant to ride, and as often as not, are not put together correctly and certainly not adjusted properly (brakes, shifters, etc.). Good luck, and hope you stick with the sport! 18 speeds are worth nothing and harder to find. specialized hardrock, a very good general purpose bike. very good for mountain biking i got one $300 and its perfect reliable, ready for disc brakes, upgradeable. perfect! Giant Boulder Se, about $240 Giant Sedona, a comfort series mountain bike (more on-road) about $270 Giant Cypress, a hybrid, about $270 Look at Specialized's hardrock series and possibly the rockhopper series. Take a look at www.specialized.com and don't forget a helmet! |
