What bike to buy? Mountain, road.......? |
Ive been thinking to buy a bike for some time now, But always get a cold feet! of not knowing what to buy! Any how, recently Canadian Tire, has a %50 off on Schwinn bikes for $299, reg price is $499. Aluminium frame with shimano pieces on it. Now, i may occasionally go off-road or may be a bit mountain as well. One thing that confuses me is that, there's no shock on the body, only on the front wheel. As you have noticed, i don't know much about bikes, so is this going to give me a bad rid? ALSO, what is your input on the whole thing? Price, Schwinn, condition,...THANKS. A mountain bike with only front suspension is called a hard tail, or HT. A bike with suspension on both tires is called a full suspension, or FS. Both can be mountain bikes. And for the price, I think you will get a better hardtail than a FS. You will probably ride anywhere except the knarliest terrain infested with rocks and ruts. A good thing about HT is that they're good bikes to learn techniques and how to pick the lines. Also, FS bikes less than 1,000 usually don't have a good rear suspension design or good shocks, which makes them a bob machine. Bob is when the bike bounces up and down because of peddaling motion. Also, if you plan riding on paved road for a bit, it's better a hardtail. Scwhinn makes some good bikes. Not exceptional, but some are a good value. I started biking in 2004 with a Schwinn Mesa. That sounds like a hybrid bike. Many hybrids only have the front bike. If you are new to cycling, a hybrid is a great type of bike to start with. Go with what Roberto said - he's right. For just $330, you can get a Specialized Hardrock XC. Check out website below. They're a 'proper' Mountain Bike (MTB) manufacturer. 29er refers to bikes with 29 inch diameter wheels. 'Normal' MTBs come with 26" diameter wheels. I think you need to do a lot more reading and research! How about visiting your local library? One good (but out of print) book is Richard Ballantine's Ultimate Bicycle Book. http://www.specialized.com/bc/sbcbkmodel... http://www.amazon.com/living-ultimate-bi... Get a mountain bike because a mtn bike can take a slicker thinner tire but a road bike cant take a thick knobby dirt tire also a hardtail with a good front suspension is usually better for dirt jumping and hill climbing. Schwinn is a good brand, go for a mountain bike, it's great for both. I take you live in Canada as well so go for a mountain bike, mine works great |
