Road, Mountain or Hybrid Bike? (Woman's)? |
I'm looking to start riding for exercise and lower body toning reasons only (the treadmill is getting too boring). Which of these bikes will be best for that? I don't think it matters which kind of bike you get for exercise. I think it matters how much you use it and how fast you go. If you are going on roads I think road bikes are much more fun, as I find it easier to go faster which makes it more fun for me. I don't like moving a heavy bike in addition to my weight up a hill, so I go for light weight bikes which generally is a road bike. And I buy them cheap used from yard sales or bike shops which also sell second hand bikes. It's possible to get pretty good bikes this way, and if the bike eventually gets stolen you may not feel quite as bad about it. Generally bikes from chain stores (like walmart) are no good. It all depends on where you live and what kind of riding you want to do. If you want to go off road at all, then go with a mountain bike, they are very versatile. I use mine for both paved and unpaved areas. First you have to ask yourself what sort of terrain you will be riding on. If there are roads and only roads you plan to ride on, a road bike is an option. If there is any plan of riding anywhere but on the pavement, a road bike is not an option. Also don't be surprised if your reason for riding changes, it is very addictive. You might start out with just lower body toning in mind, but this may soon turn into a hobby and soon after that a passion. So give some thought to what type of riding you might like to do in the future too. But, if you want my opinion, I don't like hybrids, there OK for everything, but good for nothing(I know this is where I get slammed by people who don't agree, I like people that ride hybrids, I like anyone who rides, I just don't have a use for a hybrid) Mountain Bike. I've been doing resistance training for years, but nothing makes my lower body look better than my mountain bike. The heavier bike offers more resistance and durability, plus you can ride a wider variety of terrain. I easily put over a hundred miles a week on my bike, you'll soon be addicted too, enjoy. I would choose Mountain Biking. Road biking is like a being on a bike treadmill, it gets pretty boring at times. IMO In Mountain Biking the terrain changes and you use more technical skills for climbing loose dirt trails, going down hills, riding through streams, down stairs etc. Incorporate a couple of spin classes a week to really get that muscle definition going. If you have to ask that, then obviously a hybrid bike is the answer for you. A road bike is designed for fast riding and long distances on a road, and an uncomfortable riding position for neophytes. A mountain bike is designed for off road, is generally heavier, and with stubby tires. A hybrid gives you the advantage of a smoother, slimmer tire, lighter bike, more comfortable riding position, and more forgiving gears. If you are not an avid bike rider, I believe you would find a hybrid better for what you want. |
