What are good mountain biking tires for Western PA? |
I need to get new mountain biking tires and I am looking to spend under $60 per tire, if possible. I mainly mountain bike in Allegheny county in Western PA. I ride a hard tail and most of my biking is technical. Any suggestions? Kenda Karma's are an excellent XC tire for speed and are amazingly sticky for a low-profile knob - very good in technical roots and rock gardens (as long as it is not wet). 26x2.0's are ~470g and retail for $55. Similar tread pattern to these would be the Maxxis CrossMark - the eXeption model weighs in at 530g. and retails for $37 at http://www.jensonusa.com (get 'em at your local bike shop if you can though). My other favourite is the Specialized Roll X Sworks Tire - very aggressive knob pattern with speed ramps on the centre knobs to keep the speed in the flats high. Are a bit heavier at ~580g on a 26x2.0. I raced the 2006 season on these babies - bit more aggressive tread for those mud holes on the race course, clean well and keep me flying on the dry stretches. Rubber compound is soft as well (stick well in the technical stuff) but will likely only last a season if you do a lot of riding (10+ hrs a week plus races) or have to hit the pavement to get to the single-track. Kenda's Nevegal series is always highly rated in Mtn Bike Action - but they are more of an all-mountain tire - 26x2.10 at 610g (lightest version and smallest profile width). Get the lightest tubes you can find too - not much point spending extra cash on light-weight rubber and then sticking a heavy tube inside. I think Armstrong still puts out some good tires at a reasonable price. |
