Are Iron Horse Mountain Bikes any Good? |
If anyone has any personal experience with this brand or has suggestions for other brands of mountain bike please let me know yes to a point. They have a very broad range of bikes. they have very bottom end bikes that you can buy at local sports shops, and then they have those bikes that require you to take out a second mortgage on your home. The cheapest ironhorse, is going to be better then the most expensive walmart bike. Personally, i think jamis makes the best bikes for the money. This company somehow manages to put high end components on bikes and sell them at prices that make their competitors jaws drop. They are constantly winning best bike awards from nearly every mountain bike magazine... but, the issue comes to its just another chinese made bike. I dont have a major problem paying $400 more for a bike made in the US. Yes, Iron Horse mtb's are good. I would trust them under me on the trail any day of the week. I don't know how good they really are. They sell them on the internet, and I have seen them at Dick's sporting goods. I was not impressed the quality of the bikes sold at Dick's, I would concerned their bikes only slightly above the department stores, but only barely and I wouldn't buy a bike there. I know I've seen good prices on Iron Horse bikes in catalogs and the net, but you really can't judge without seeing them in person. So my guess (by their decent prices) that they probably are not the greatest quality, and was not too impressed by what I saw at Dick's. Shop at your local bike shops. Try out lots of them and in different price ranges from low to high. You'll learn alot about what makes the difference, and why good bikes cost more. For mountain bikes I'd go with Gary Fisher. Just think of Gary Fisher as the father of mountain biking. Gary Fisher bikes are made by Trek, but the difference over Trek's mountain bikes is the geometery. In the comparably priced mountain bikes by each company, the Treks will generally have better looking components, but the Fisher's have better working geometry. ( I do like Trek for other bikes, but Gary Fisher for mountain bikes) http://fisherbikes.com/ Iron Horse makes very good mountainbikes, esp the DW-Link full suspension bikes. They're efficient to pedal and the suspension stays active even under hard braking. The dw technology is similar to Giant's Maestro technology which uses two rocking links to create a virtual pivot point (Instant Center) which changes along the suspension travel. You may want to check heir website fordetails and bike models they offer. Also, check mbaction.com and go to Ask RC. I agree with all the above...however there is one thing worth saying. Most manufacturers out source their low end bike to one of 3 wholesale frame makers overseas. Unless you are talking about the higher end bicycles you would probably be looking at the same thing with a Trek or Haro label on it. Like I said...MOST...not all. Look at the components, those are more important than the frame anyway. See http://bike.shimano.com/ and get familiar with the different levels of components. You will also find Ironhorse at Performance Bicycles (net and local stores). GL, Cheers |
