Road bike recommendation?

I currently ride mountain bikes(freeride), and I want to get into road biking, any recommendations for a bike thats less than $700? Maybe ebay?
Factors:
I weigh 150lbs loaded up
The area that I ride in is laden with hills, mountain passes, etc.
I'm 16, and I need a bike that will take abuse.

Thanks,
Ryan.

I wouldn't worry about brands concentrate on components and wear. Around this price you are probably looking at 105 shimano gear, tough you might get lucky and jag Ultega. Do not rule out Dura ace and Campagnola gear if you are super lucky

A "compact" system would be better (lots of hills), but this will make the job that much harder. Standard gearing should be alright. You can slip on a different cassette if first is too high.

Your weight won't be a hassle but you will grow a bit being 16. You should fit on a 54 cm standard frame or squeeze on a medium compact. Go to a bike shop and check to make sure.

Good luck and happy riding
That's about the min you want to spend on a road bike. The Pilot series from Trek has one on sale at that price currently. Ebay is a good choice if you do your homework.
Ebay and Bikesdirect.com are a couple places to look. I'm 5'8" and ride a 52cm. Check out bike shops for late summer sales. The bike size isn't that simple though. Basically the stand over height (ground to top tube) should allow about an inch of clearance for you. Being 16 if you expect you grow more go with a 54cm or possible 56cm. Each manufacturer is a little different so you can't use the number for certain, always get the stand over measurement.

$700 is just enough to get a good bike too. If you're concerned about steep hills many of the bikes at $700 have triple chainrings giving them much lower gearing. I use a double but I live in Michigan.

You may want something like this one:

A common way to customize the fit is to replace the seat or stem to shorter/longer less or more rise to adjust your reach. You can flip the stem over to get a lower/high handlebar position too. Of course the seat is adjustable too. You need to ride it to get used to the position first though, you will find yourself stretched out more on a road bike. It will feel different than a MTB.
Go with either a Trek 1000 or the Jamis Ventura Comp. The Trek was Bicycling Magazines top entry level pick in 2005 and 2006, and the Jamis is their top pick for 2007. Both are in your price range. My local Trek dealer is selling a 2006 Trek 1000 for 500 bones right now. But also, don't be afraid to check into Ebay either, you could find a steal.
model year 2008 is about to start and some shops still have 06s in their inventory. you should be able to find a scortching deal on a new bike at your lbs. its important to go to the shop and get fitted to your bike, more so than in mtb. a trip to your local shop if only to test ride a product is a must. if you can find a better deal on line then buy it but definatly have it fitted at a lbs.
newish road biker, crusty old bmx punk.
I also do alot of a freeride and the occassional bit of road riding. Being a poor student type I couldn't afford a decent road bike so I bought an old 'falcon' for 拢12 (about $20) from a yard sale and upgraded the tires and bars etc. It's about 20 years old but it's well made and has good components etc. I manage to keep up with my dad's fancy racing bike so I'm sorted. Anyway my point is you don't need a big flashy bike, just get a decent one and enjoy it.

PS ebay is good for bikes because they depreciate in value so much with age.
