Inexpensive bike?

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive bike to purchase for paved trail and street riding?

I want to take up cycling as a cardio work out but I don't want to invest a lot in case I don't stick to it.

Wal-Mart has adult bikes as low as $60 but I don't know if they are really cheap, worthless bikes.

From past experience, I prefer lightweight bikes. Not looking for a full suspension mountain bike or anything like that.

I would suggest an entry level all terrain bike, such as a Diamondback Outlook.... maybe even a Diamondback Sorrento if you want something a little nicer.

It would do you well to look at bikes in the $200 range at a bike shop or at a well known bike retailer such as Dick's Sporting Goods... though I would stay away from Dunhams Sports and The Sports Authority.

Considering a $200 bike might seem outlandish for someone that just wants to "ride around", but think about this...

In the 1870s when the safety bike (a bike with 2 wheels the same size) was first introduced, the average cost was about $81... or almost 3 months pay. Fast forward to today, I would never expect someone to spend 3 months pay on a bike, but perhaps 3 or 4 days salary might be a good start.

If you end up keeping the bike for say, 2 years, and you ride it 100 days a year (every day during the summer), that bike just cost you less than a bottle of soda for each day of riding. So, just avoid one soda a day the cost of the bike is... zero. Keep it 3 years, follow a maintenance schedule, and now you have been paid to keep the bike.

Don't be afraid of walking into a bike shop... the people aren't there to get rich (believe me on this) but are there because they love the sport and WANT you to ride. Source(s): 27 years in the industry
When it comes to bikes, you get what you pay for. My recommendation is just to pick up that one at Wal-Mart, it might last you a year or two if you keep up on the little repairs and it won't cost you a bunch. It won't be lightweight most likely though. Lightweight bikes are normally made of of some kind aluminum alloy, which is expensive to make both light and strong.
Anything from Walmart / K-Mart / Target, ect is junk and not worth the effort to bring home.
The GT Agressor. Cheap and best of its class. Can't really upgrade it a whole lot and it is a tad heavier than the costlier bikes but it's quality is bulletproof.
