Do i need a new bike? |
i'm currently using a full suspension mountain bike with V-brake the bike work perfectly fine but the V-brake is not enough for me although i mainly cycle on road and seldom go off-road i wanted to change to a disc brake but i need to get a new wheelset and fork which cost at least $200 the bike shop owner recommended me a hasa hardtail bike with disc brake. cost only $450 should i change to the hardtail bike? Is it just your rear wheel that is skidding? I'm assuming that it is, since the only way I have ever been able to skid was locking up just my rear and not having any front braking. I'd suggest loosening the cable a little on the rear brake and tightening the front, so both wheels are used for braking. Your bike should dip down a little in front like a car does when you stop. You may need to adjust the pads slightly also. If both are adjusted correctly, then maybe try changing tires. If it's used purely on the street, maybe try changing to a hybrid tire or maybe a wider mountain bike tire like a 1.25 instead of 1inch wide tire. Or, you can run your tires at a little lower pressure than the maximum thats recommended. That way you will have a little more rubber on the pavement and it won't slide as easily. Personally though, I'm not a fan of anything besides mountain bike tires. And even then, I run mine at about 35 intead of the 40 mine recommend. Hard tails tend to be lighter from my experience, and there isn't a shock absorber to absorb the force you are exerting when you pedal (although, maybe it's just the cheap bikes I'm familiar with that do that). Disk breaks do sound nice. I've always been concerned about getting replacement pads though, since they aren't exactly something you will find down at Walmart. No. What you need to do first is finish your homework, clean your room, wash the dishes, takeout the trash, brush your teeth, comb your hair, and help your mom with dinner. Your Bike will slide with V or with Disc brakes. Sounds like you probley own one of those department store bikes. Those bieks are crappy and have low quality. If your gonig to be riding alot. Buy a new bike and invest in something with a better rep and better Componets. Try Brands like Specialized, Trek, Giant, GT, Iron horse safety 1st! mercury of love change the fork but the rims could stay maybe you need to change the hubs, buy hydraulic disc brakes they stop faster and get a front disc size 8" and rear disc size 6" What's your budget? How far is your Commute? Would you say its 95% commute and 5% "off trail"? You live in a flat part of the country? Hills? Lots of rain? Desert area with sand (ala Phoenix) etc? hardtails are more efficient on the road but spend as much as your budget will allow. $450 for a bike with disc brakes probably isn''t all that good. Consider bikes from more well know brands. As for your skidding i suggest also to lower air pressure but also learn how to brake more gradually rather than just grabbing them. If you use an "emergency" brake method and grab your brake levers your tires will lose traction and you WILL slide. plan ahead before you brake whenever possible. |
