Mountain bike vs. Road Bike...? |
How is it going? I was wondering what is the best bike to look at mountain or road? I was interested in dabbling in doing a triathalon. Mostly though just riding the bike for fitness though. Would a mountain bike be alright to use in a triathalon? Thanks. If you want to be competitive, you will need a road bike. Even if you put 1-1/2 inch high pressure slick tires on a mountain bike, they don't usually have the top-end gearing that you will need to keep up with the road bikes on the flats. The hybrid will have the same problem because they usually have mountain components. Both the mountain and the hybrid bikes will not be as good aerodynamically as the road bike because of its drop bars. Aerodynamics makes a surprising amount of difference when you are competing. Try a cyclocross bike. Boy, you're looking for 1 bike to satisfy needs that are on the opposite ends of the spectrum. You need to decide what you want to do mountian bike or road ride. get a hybrid so you have the benefits of both! then, if you get really serious about trail biking, you can get a true mt. bike. They're harder and slower on the street, though, if your're going to do any training there. |
