Buying a crummy dept. store sub 100 dollar mountain bike for causal use?

If I wanted to get a mountain for the use of going to school(about 1 mile away) and back and for some recreational rides(Just around town on the road) would I be safe getting a bike from toys r us or target for less than 80 dollars? I'm 6'3 and weigh 185 pounds

how about this one?

If you are a good bike mechanic, and can take care of a bike, then those bikes will do.

That said, I do not recommend those bikes. Check EBay or Craigslist for better deals on better bikes.

Happy riding!

MR is right.

Although those $80 Specials at Target and Toys R Us are OK for kids riding to their buddies house they really won't hold up to your size for very long... even for just cruising around on the road. They aren't very reliable and tend to perform poorly.

How about looking in the paper for used bikes? Look for brands such as Diamondback, Raleigh, Trek, KHS, or Specialized. There are tons of them around- just look until you see one in your price range.

I got mine at Walmart.
It was on sale.
Original price was $149.99
When they rang it up, I got it for $89.99 around
Thankgiving.
Look for a sale, I would get one for a little
more than $80
My bike is only going to be rode when I visit my son
I left it at his place.
My main bike at home is a LWB recumbent

Usually the very cheapest just don't work well. Many times a bike for $120 to $170 will be a much better bike. Look for a bike with v brakes not side pull and metal levers not plastic. the extra $50 is more than worth it.

This is easy: Craigslist. I've seen many, barely used $300-$400 bikes going for under a $100 (and dept. store bikes in the same condition going for $10-$25--not that they're worth it!).

If you can fit on it, sure. At 6'3", you'll probably hit your knees on the handlebars of any Toys R Us bike.

You'd be much better off getting an old used, but good bike for the same price. Check out the classifieds in your area.

those bikes look like they will brake apart and die. I agree with all the other guys. I would spend 200 in stead of 100.
