How different is a STXC race from a regular cross country mountain bike race?

I did my first race (normal XC) a week ago, and am considering doing a STXC. I guess the pace is faster and it sounds like the course is a bit less technical. What else is different? What should a beginner expect?

A STXC race is a short track race, these are generally held on shorter less technical tracks. Many times the short track is held on the same course as the regular cross country but uses a shortened version of the trail. The pace is normally faster and is really just a non-stop sprint sort of like a crit race.
