What kind of fork should I buy for my mountain bike?

I have a 2004 stumpjumper and the rear suspension is 4 in. or 100 mm I need to get a new fork and a lot are either 120 mm or 140 mm or adjustable length. Would it be weird to have more suspension up front then in the rear.

What fork would you recommend if price wasn't an issue.

I had that model a while ago. I would go with a Rock Shock Reba with the U-Turn feature. It's a pretty nice, light and responsive fork than can be manually adjusted from somewhere around 90mm to 115mm, which is the perfect size for that Stumpy.

130 or 140mm would be too large, in my opinion.

Edit:

Jax had it good except that coil forks are plusher than air. The advantages of air is that the forks are lighter, and easier to adjust to different rider's weight. On a coil fork or shock, if you need to change the stiffness, you need to change the coil, but on air, you just put more or less air and that's it.

Now, shock technology is advancing, and they are producing some air shocks and forks that behave pretty close to what a coil one feels.

Allot of bikes I have seen have more suspension in the front than in the rear....you probably want to stick with the same size (within 10-20MM) that came on the bike - or you will really change the ridinging characteristics of the bike - probably in a bad way. Becasue you will change the head tube angle if you go much bigger or smaller.

Marzochi makes great forks of all types.
and so does Manitou.

The specific fork really depends on your type of riding - is it down hill, freeride or crosscountry? there's a different fork for all of these and even a fork that would be good at 2 of them.

Check out this MArzocchi's website. there is a useful "intended use chart." for their forks.

If you want the best pillow ride - get air sprung.
If you want lower maint and indestructability - get coil sprung.

& Price always matters.
