How can I lock up my bike in a way that it cannot be stolen?

I live in a tiny upstairs duplex and have no garage or way to get the heavy mountain bike up my skinny stairway. I thought about chaining it with my little bike chain to the railing on the front steps....but a local policeman told me that won't stop them. They'll just cut thru it. Is there some type of super chain that cannot be cut thru? lol. Anything like that? I've seen people remove the seat from their bike but heck- that wouldn't steal me if I were out to steal a bike! I have the bike crammed in our tiny entryway till I can figure out something practical and safe to do with it. I plan on riding every day from here on out so something that isn't too big of a hassle would be nice if at all possible. Looking forward to hearing your suggestions! Thanks:)

Take your bike inside.

1. The constant exposure to the elements outside will ruin your bike.

2. There is no magic lock, chain, or cable that can't be defeated.

Here is how you get your bike up and down your stairway. Lift the front wheel up so your bike is vertical balancing it on the rear wheel. The length is gone and now is only a bit taller than you. Any bike can be maneuvered up and down any staircase in this manner.

If you want to keep the bike, bring it inside.

I have to agree with every one above , and remember locks and keys are for honest people

the folding bike may be your best option , I myself own 1 and am a trucker , I carry it inside my trailer , and since it folds I can put it in the cab , also nice when at home since it fits in to the trunk of the car
take a look at downtube bikes on ebay , best in its class and good price , the guy selling them designed the bike . read the links on the ebay page , very informitive regarding the design . have had mine for 2 1/2 yrs and very happy with it

this is the 1 I got although this page is showing UK contact seller at above page on this model ,

Best of luck

The only thing you can do is make it more trouble to steal your bike than the bike is worth. Try the bike locks that have kevlar cables. Lace the cable through the frame and wheels. Make sure you set it up so they can't steal the bike by cutting a single piece out of the railing.

HTH

Somehow manage to keep it inside, if they can't steal the bike itself, they'll go for the wheels and all the other easily removable components.

remove your back tire and bring it into your house. All it takes is a bike wrench :-)

I'd get multiple chains. One to chain each tire with and one for the body. Thiefs are in too much of a hurry to try to break three or four chains.

the thing is, if someone really wamts to take the bke they can overcome about anyting
I would use a oatedcable or something hard to cut through and make sure to have the cable go throuh the frame and any quick re;ease rims.
your best bet is to make it as hard as possible so any other bike would be an easier target.

dont use a cheap chain as they are easily cut or snapped.
you need some decent locks maybe 2 one for the main frame and other for quick release mechsanisms. something very hard and coated with rubber for waterproof capabbilities may i recommend kryptonite locks i have one and they are brilliant http://www.kryptonitelock.com/Products/L...
is there site they sell in most shops. it will depend on how much crime you think there is in your area check the site it helps for this i have the krypto flex 1018 and its perfect strong but durable and portable. but if you are only going to use this lock at your house then i would reccomend the New York Fahgettaboudit, range
hope this helps

Consider buying a folding bike, take it upstairs for security, and keep it out of the elements.

Many people in a similar situation have gone to folders. get a good one, not a $250 or lower cheapo.

you will be able to fold/unfold faster than putting all those locks and chains on.

sleep better too.

Look at Dahon's better folders for a start:

i agree take it inside but use a bike bag you can get them for the same price as you would spend on all these locks and your bike doesnt rust out side!
