Mountain biking question? |
how important is full suspension if i want to do a bunch of California trails? a lot of small-average size rocks. if you have ridden a full suspension would u ever go back to front suspension? im 5'8, 145 lbs, can someone estimate how big my bike has to be? around 19 inches? Where in California are you? Many of the trails in Cali are fine for a Hardtail. If you live somewhere like Tahoe (where I live) or Downieville...other places that are very rocky...full suspension is pretty much the only option. In many places, full suspension is still desireable, if not required. Full suspension bikes help keep your wheels on the ground, even after hitting small rocks (the kind that you would sort of "bounce over" on a hardtail), and that keeps you moving forward with less effort. They are also super fun to ride, because you can learn to "load" the suspension with your body weight before jumps or rocks you want to launch off of. This also helps you to slingshot through banked turns, like riding a motorcycle. As for your size, many mountain bikes come in s,m,l sizes now. It will vary between manufacturers, but I would say you'd likely be comfortable on a medium, or 17" bike (or whatever the manufacturer's equivalent is). It is always important to test ride a bike, and have the shop fit you properly. They can change out certain parts to make a bike fit better, often at no charge. Yuor gonns need full suspension, reduces wear on you body. A 19" frame would be fine if you were 6'2", but you're going to need something closer to a 16". if you're doing California trails, make sure you have the latest, most expensive bike on the market so you can pose with the rest of the Californians. Be ready to talk about your heart rate, your damping curve, how tubes are SO 1999, and the five different energy foods you have in your $300 Assos jersey. Don't forget to feign exhaustion as you crest that 3,000' peak from the "low" oxygen content! lol @ bikernoj...doesnt sound necessary really, id think a hardtail would be just as good and fun. he he bikernoj |
