I'm trying to convince my parents to get me a road bike for my b-day, but i don't know which brand?

I'll be 16 in a couple weeks, and i've been into cycling ever since i saw the 04 Tour de France on tv. Only problem is that last year i had knee surgery so i really couldn't ride much during the summer, and since i'm in school i havn't had much time to go riding, and the weather here in wisconsin has been pretty cold up untill a few weeks ago when i first took out my bike. So i'm basically horribly out of shape, but i want to change that this summer, but my parents don't really believe me, and also the fact that i know close to nothing about road bikes, or even mountain bikes (i have one) i was hoping maybe sombody on these boards knew of a site (or maybe a book) that recommends certian brands for beginners and maybe explains more about how a road bike is different from a mountain bike (besides the obvious) because i really wanted to be able to join a club or a team before i'm out of HS. So any advice or help would be greatly appreciated:)

You have to go with Trek since you live in Wisconsin! I've had Treks since about 1983 and have had very good luck with them. 15000+ miles per year and no major problems other than normal wear and tear. Check out the Trek website at www.trekbikes.com and look over the different styles and models they have. They also show the suggested retail price for each bike as well. They have a dealer locator feature where you just put in your zip code and a list of local dealers will show up.

Once you think you might know what you want, go to your local dealer and get properly fitted and take a few test rides. Then the dealer can get you set up and you'll be good to go!
Trek has some nice entry bikes like the Trek 1000, rated #1 in Cycling Magazine.

It all depends...

Some things you may want to consider:

Where will you be riding? Strictly on road, off road, urban (hoping over curbs, etc), somewhere in between?

What do you want to do? Go fast? Be comfortable?

What is your budget?

If you want to stay on the roads, you may want a road bike. You'll go faster for sure. If you plan on going cross country sometimes, a road bike is not for you - you'll destroy it. If you're planning on going urban, you may also not want a road bike.

If you're planning on going off road often, or being abusive to your bike, you may want a mountain bike, as they tend to be more durable. However, mountain bikes tend to be heavier, and slower. If you want to go fast on the road, a mountain bike is not for you.

Of course, you could get some hybrid bike that is both light (not nearly as light as a speed bike), and durable that you can ride on and off road easily.

Some nice brand names (expensive, potentially) include: Specialized and Trek.

Have fun!
A book that may help you out is: Bicycling For Dummies. No, I'm not being rude. It'll help you out when you decide to choose a bike - what you should look for.
Trek! You live in Wisconsin, dont you! (Trek is from the big cheese state). Models? The 1000 (approx 700$), 1200 (850$), and so on. Also, look at the Specialized Dolce. It is also a womens specific road bike (women have short arms, so the top tube (the long part you stretch your arms over) is shorter.) Also, the bars are narrower to accomodate narrower shoulders, it has the brake levers more inward to accept smaller hands, the bar drops (the curvy part of the road bars) are also more shallow to accomdate smaller hands. Top it all off with a womens specific seat (wider rear for wider hips), and you've got yourself a womens specific road bike!
