I just got braces on my teeth and want to go mountain biking but...?

I am hitting tooth on tooth and tooth on bracket. Is there a device like a mouth guard I can wear to minimize the possibility of pain???

Go to your local sports shop..or sporting goods section of the departments store.

They should have mouthguards for a lot less than a dentist will charge you, and they'll do the same job for you (sorry, Docs)

If you get the type that you boil and then bite, it'll give you a good fit. I would put wax on the braces first (you can get the wax at the drugstore) so your braces don't get caught up in the mouthguard while its forming.
Yes mouth guards are great! My boyfriend sleeps with them to keep from grinding his teeth. They come in different sizes, if you want to call your dentist and see if they can fit one for you!
Not really you can take some pain meds to help.
they should have given you one!
when i got my braces, they gave me one along with other things.
go back and ask
a gumshield is always good but considering the fact that u have braces u would want to get one custom made by your dentist which should only take a maximum time of a week but i guess it probabli depends on what kind of braces you have as to whether a gum shield/tooth guard would help.

soooo i would say, ask your dentist, he/she is the 1 who knos about these things
Two things. Yes you can get a mouth guard when you have braces (I know because I've had one while in braces). There are also special sports mouth guards for those in braces. These will cost - but are worth it if you are in impact sports.

The second is talk to your orthodontist. You should not be hitting tooth on bracket. If you are you'll end up either snapping the bracket off or chipping a tooth. It sounds suspect to me they'd let you leave the office is you were biting on your bracket. Perhaps with the allignment of your teeth it was unavoidable - but it needs to be mentioned as a problem to them. They may be able to put a smaller bracket on that tooth.

Barring that you can buy dental wax which will cover the bracket so it doesn't irritate the inside of your cheek - however all the dental wax in the world won't help if the bottom teeth are hitting the top brackets or vice versa.

I'd hold off on the mountain biking until you get the okay from the orthodontist. If you snap a bracket due to sports they'll make you (or your parents) pay to get it replaced (and parent's get really grouchy when having to pay extra orthodontist bills)
