How hard is it to ride a bike from Chicago to Florida? |
My brother and some friends saying that is its impossible for me to ride my bike from chicago to florida in 10 days. They haved offered me money about 500 hundred dollars and the cost of food. I dont think that it will be that hard, i mean 10 miles an hour for 10 hours a day for 10 days on a bike is easy. The only hard part would be the mountains.Tell me what you guys think. It can be done. I did a solo ride from Georgia to Upstate NY in 1987 in ten days. The Blue Ridge Mountains weren't too bad, and Pennsylvania had a lot of rolling hills. I wouldn't say it was easy. But if I had the time, I would do it again tommorow. Be prepared for any weather. Bring tubes & tires & a basic tool kit. Try to pick a route that runs more or less parallel to the interstates, that way, you won't have any trouble finding places to stay or to eat. (But of course you can't ride on the interstates). And bring a cell phone in case you get into trouble along the way and to keep them informed of your progress. Of course you have to be in good riding condition, if you haven't got a lot of time in the saddle this year, it would be tough to do it. Make sure your bike is in good mechanical order. And one last thing-- have you figured out how you're getting back? If your name is not Lance Armstrong it will be very hard. um. depends. on a few things. i suppose. make it $800 with them. don't go any lower. don't give in. let them give in. $800. remember that. maybe go higher. get more people to bet on you. you'll make more money. ! and i have a solution. on the first day you can go and be riding on your way. but then just take a quick detour then ride to a bus stop. throw your bike aboard. ride to FL. get a cheap motel. stay there for 9 days. call them on the 10th day and there ya go! you won! cause even if you don't have that much money to do this now, the $500($800) will pay for itself once you get their money. oh yeah and whos paying for your transportation back? better make it a 1000 dollar bet now. don't go lower. $1000. remember that. Hmmm...interesting. Why go through the mountains? Ride your bike to say New Orleans and go east from there. No mountains...I don't think. Only about 1200 miles. Good luck...sounds like fun. Keep in mind that you will be travelling on back roads, which frequently have more twists and turns than an interstate highway (on which bicycles are not allowed), so your total mileage might be quite a bit higher-- I'd say 1200 miles to the Panhandle, and tack on another 500 miles if you are talking south Florida. There is no way you can do that in 10 days if it is an unsupported ride (i.e. you are carrying all your necessities with you on the bike). You might be able to do it in 10 days if it's a supported ride (with a friend following you in a car with all your water and supplies and hand them to you while you are on the bike, like what they do in the Tour de France), but even then it would be tight. 100 miles a day for 10 days would be challenging for even seasoned riders. If you have to ask you wont make it. i love you. do it. |
