I want to buy a set of mag wheels i need to know what 8/9 gears means?

in the add it said the rims are for a bike with 8/9 gears. how can i check my mountain bike to see if i have a compatiable bike with the right gears. please help with this question it is driving crazy.

The rims are made to fit any amount of gears ( 7,8,9,10 ) . It is the hub that takes in the cassette (not the rims!) so there shouldn't be any worries about this . Its the rear derailer that you should take note of when fitting 8 speed or 9 speed gears . Also , do take note of the shifter AND chain when fitting you bike . When in doubt , bring your bike to a reputable bike shop and have the people there sort it out for ya .
the back wheel has cogs on it, right? count them.

if there are 8 or 9, it's the right size. probably.

maybe it'd be safer if you post up your bike make and model and a link to the wheels.
8/9 gears means 8 or 9 gears
drive weel has8 or 9 sprokets and you will need a thinner chain to accomidate the several sprockets on the weel. a bike with 5 speed or six or seven speed rear cluster (the sprocets) has a wider chain because there is more room on the rear sprocet cluster for the way it is.
-Hey There! What seller means is that the rear wheel hub on the mag wheels are 8 and 9 speed compatible. Check your original rear wheel and count how many cogs you have in the rear. If you have 8 or 9 cogs that will determine if you have a 8 or 9 speed bike. If you have 8 or 9 cogs you can use the rear rim on your bike.

-If you have 7 cogs (7 speed) and smaller you can still use the rear wheel, but you need to purchase a hub spacer to use with your smaller cassettte or cogs.

-8 speeds use a wider chain and 9 speeds use a narrow 9 speed chain. Remember 8 speed and 9 speed shifters are non compatible, so if you have a 8 speed you can't use a 9 speed cassette, they are indexed different.

-OK, I hope this helps.
