Back pain?????? |
my issue is the in order for me to ride my road bike without causing myself serious back pain later on i have to put a gel cover on the seat. it seems as if i ride without the cover all of the vibrations from bumps case like a stiffening pain in my back later on in the day and will make it hard for me to straighten up from a seated position. this usually takes a few days to recover from. any suggestions of what i can do to be able to ride my road bike without the gel cover. i am able to ride my mountain bike with out a cover but i believe that is due to the shocks absorbing the vibrations strengthen the core! ab muscles support the back - it is the biggest thing that will help. I also suggest getting properly fitted from beginning to end at a shop. Keep your back straight while biking. Other than that, mountain biking will cause some uncomfort because of the vibrations, but thats normal. Start with the fitting and core strengthening. I would also suggest some good back stretches after riding to help release any tension in the muscles. Get a good book on stretching, and do it everyday, riding or not, and do your entire body. It's amazing how many people can't even touch their toes....anyway, I agree with the idea of also strengthening your core muscles so that your back is not doing so much work supporting your body. try suspensoin seat posts if you don't have a full suspension bike. they should help. good luck =) Improve your core strength and add a carbon fiber seat post. I used to have some serious back issues when I rode a lot and the answer is twofold: Strengthen your core!! This helped me more than anything else. Do leg lifts, crunches, even push and pull ups. There are also many back specific exercises (ie: Superman's) that will help to strengthen your back muscles. These helped me more than anything. There are several websites (I don't have their addresses anymore) that show you how to do these...make sure you do these exercises right or you could cause more problems!!! Stretch!! I find that an increased stretching regime helped to lessen the tightness in my back. Especially stretch your hams and quads. That may sound funny, but if you think about it they connect right up to your lower back. When I first hurt my back I did do a lot of yoga and it definitely helped. Now I'm just sure to get in a good set of stretches after every ride. You don't need to spend money on fancy gizmos for your bike (although it is a good idea to make sure your bike fits you properly) . If you do these two things your problem will most likely be greatly reduced. Trust me...I still ride a fully rigid mountain bike. My doctor and my sister who's an athletic trainer. |
