Numb Feet ? |
So a friend of mine just bought a Specialized Elite Allez w/56 frame. He is 5'9" 220lbs. He rides with mallet style pedals on one side, and clip-ins on the other. Shoes are new shimano mountain bike shoes that clip in. So...the problem is numb feet on the ball of his feet....any ideas as to what the cause is ?.... could it be seat, pinching nerves ?....different combination of shoes/clips ? Probably just the pressure of pushing on the pedals constantly. I had the same problem with my hands when I was riding. Extra padding MIGHT help but won't get rid of it. A less likely possibility is the pinching of nerves from the seat, on the sides of his legs. And yes, even tight shoes/shoelaces. I have had the same problem and on long rides still do. You might want to go to a bike shop and check the positioning of the rider. If your friend bought the bike at a bike shop they should do a fit test for free, and if he didn't he might be able to talk them into checking him out on the bike for free. If he hasn't been riding long, it is just something that he is going to have to get used to which is the most likely cause. Might try loosening his shoes first and then if that doesn't work going up to a bike shop. If he has regular Shimano SPD clips, that can be the problem. The basic clip doesn't allow for much float and what happens on longer rides is that "hot spots" develop on the feet. SPD clips are great for regular rides and mountain biking, but if your friend is doing longer road trips, I would recommend that he invest in a set of clips made for road cycling. They cost more, but they're definitely worth it. Any good bike shop, especially those that are geared more towards triathletes and long distance road riders can provide your friend with several options that will be far more friendly to the feet. He should probably use road shoes as well. Road shoes typically pretty stiff and not made for walking. The soles can be made from hard plastic or carbon fiber. I'm sure once your friend gets different shoes and clips, the problems will disappear. it's from the pressure... i get it too... like sitting on the toilet too long. the easiest way to fix it is get better shoes. better pedals will help, but with a real good shoe, it won't matter as they will distribute the weight and pressure just like a good hitch on a trailer will. look for carbon fiber soles, they are generally the stiffest. well pedals should be the same, the numbness may be caused by a too high up seat post, adjust the seat height so the leg can stretch to an almost straight line All the other answers are good, but there is another option that could be the easiest to fix. Many times if you're pedaling with your toes either in or out slightly, you can get numbness in the toes. Check the alignment and adjust the cleats on your shoes so you pedal straight. When pedaling, look straight down at the feet, and if your feet disappear under your knees (you can't see them anymore)... you're usually pretty straight. |
