Can I still exercise while recovering from a back sprain?



I severely sprained my lower back (no broken bones) but it's healing slowly. Are there exercises I can still do without boring myself? I mountain bike so it's tough to just sit at home and do nothing.

I would avoid doing anything involving core acctivation because you are already using your muscles enough throughout the day with maintaing your posture.

You can try isolated upper or lower body exercises but try to avoid core acctivation and irritating it.
You can do anything that does'nt hurt.

Your body will tell you.
as far as lifting just avoid anything that can involve ur back or that u could **** up and use ur back, no ab work outs, no dead lifts, curls. Legs can still be worked by means of the mechanism on the bench press sets, bench pressing also can be done
I would strongly encourage you to not do ANYTHING while you are recovering from this; you could wind up with broken bones, paralysis, or worse, so it's worth the wait. Besides, if you don't exercise, then it will heal faster, and the sooner you can get back to mountain biking. Your back effects everything in your body; be careful what you do.

You should sign up for physical therapy (that is if you can afford it, for it is expensive). Physical therapists are professionals when it comes to assessing one's ability to do certain activities based on their current limitations, and they continue yo asses your progress toward a goal that you set for yourself.
Yes you can exercise. But it depends upon the severity of the sprain and when it occurred (distinguish treatment from acute to chronic).

First aid treatment with sprain is RICE, rest, ice, compression and elevation,... (the last two CE if given the part is inflamed or swollen).

Yes you can do exercises, just avoid movements that cause pain. Assess yourself, try to bend forward, bend back and sideways left or right,... Any position that causes pain, avoid that. You can do strengthening exercises to you extremities without compromising pain on your low back.

At any rate, it there's no more pain felt on the low back. you can start to do core muscle strengthening exercises,... but progress it accordingly. Mountain bike is a no until your back muscles are stable enough not to get sprained again.

To manage pain on the low back, if there's any, apply warm compress, OTC liniment like menthol rub and/or light massage.

For better results, go see a physician, He can better tell you what to do after thorough assessment and evaluation of your status.
